1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PDO) is a bi-functional organic compound mainly used in various synthesis reactions such as in the production of produce polyesters, polyethers and polyurethanes . The compound is mainly obtained by chemical or biochemical process wherein the natural substrate used in microbial production of 1,3-PDO is glycerol. Furthermore, the compound has other major industrial applications as it can endow improved properties for adhesives, solvents, resins, laminates, cosmetic and detergents. The production of bio-PDO consumes 40% less energy and emits 40% fewer greenhouse gases than the production of petroleum-based PDO. Also the polymer thus produced using bio-PDO emits fewer greenhouse gas accounting to just 63% compared to the production of petroleum-based polymers like nylon.
